So What Happens at Your First Visit to the Orthodontist?

This is a time for the orthodontist to listen to patient concerns and to provide an orthodontic examination. The orthodontist will likely be able to indicate whether or not treatment is needed, and if it is needed, when the best time to start treatment would be. Typical steps prior to beginning treatment include gathering orthodontic records for a complete analysis of your particular case, which provides specific information for us to tailor a treatment plan for you.

What Are Diagnostic Records?

Diagnostic records include x-rays, clinical photographs of your face, profile smile and teeth, and impressions (or scans) made of your teeth and bite. These “molds” are used to develop models for closer examination of the teeth and how the upper and lower teeth relate to each other.  X-rays are taken to look at the root structure of the teeth and how the jaw bones and teeth relate to each other.  At times additional imaging of the Temporomandibular joints is helpful.  Typically facial photographs and intra-oral photographs are taken to evaluate facial proportions, facial aesthetics and the health of the teeth and gums.

These diagnostic records collectively enable us to develop an appropriate and comprehensive treatment plan for each patient.

At SDOC, we use various advanced softwares for radiographic and image analysis and management. OrisCeph RX CE (OrisLine) is one such piece of software. It is a complete software solution for orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons for planning orthodontic and orthognathic treatments, and we currently use it for advanced cephalometric, image and model analysis of all our cases to ensure all the little details are taken into consideration before starting treatment. After all, Excellence is in the details.

What Happens Next?

Once the patient accepts the proposed treatment plan and cost involved, and it has been confirmed that no major dental work other than orthodontics is needed, such as restorations, Root Canals, etc…then you will be given appointments in preparation for your Bonding appointment as soon as the schedule allows.
